The original Volkswagen Bus, while extremely stylish and very desirable, isn’t the first vehicle that comes to mind for a trackday car build.
Nonetheless, this Swiss owner thought it would be the sane idea to swap in a top-of-the-line turbo Porsche engine, create one of the wildest performance vehicles to ever wear the VW badge.
According to the video uploader 19Bozzy92, the builder spent no less than five years putting together this VW-Group Frankenstein machine. And in place of its original air-cooled four-banger sits the modified version of the 993 Turbo’s 3.6-liter flat six motor, which makes 570 hp and 558 lb.-ft. of torque.
That’s right, this people-mover from the 1950s is pushing out enough power and to hang with modern supercars on the track. Of course, the drivetrain wasn’t the only thing that saw major changes.
And the suspension needed to be completely redone to handle all of that extra power, and big brakes hide behind those sweet multi-piece wheels, ready to haul the bus down from circuit speeds at the moment’s notice.
Take a look for yourself as a driver wrings out the Porsche-powered van, and keeps up with some mid-engine Ferraris on track.
