James Chard, a self-proclaimed Boot Bandit, was arrested on multiple felonies after he successfully ran a con operation in parking lots for several years in Michigan towns.
Chard’s M.O. consisted of hanging up signs prohibiting parking after drivers had already parked and left their vehicle. He would then boot the vehicles and demand $190 in cash for cars and $1000 for semi trucks, threatening that they will otherwise be towed at double the fine. Police believe that Chard charged $50,000 in fines this summer, in Lansing alone.
The authorities seized a large amount of cash from the Boot Bandit, so hopefully at least some of his victims will be remunerated in the end.
