McLaren’s knowledge and expertise with lightweight, aerodynamic, eye-popping supercars is simply undeniable, and the new 720S is proof of that.
We go into the McLaren Technology Center to give you some kind of ownership perspective of this magnificent car. It’s the successor to the 650S and was officially introduced at the Geneva Auto Show, featuring a more advanced carbon-fiber composite tub and a mid mounted 4.0-liter V8 twin turbo that’s good for 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque.
The engine is mated to a 7-speed SSG dual-clutch gearbox with launch control and channels the output to the rear wheels. To allow for some drama, McLaren is offering a Drift Mode in addition to Comfort, Sport, and Track settings. The car can go from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, before losing steam at 212 mph.
Inside, a touchscreen infotainment system is standard, as is a digital display screen that stows away in the dash when in Track mode. The McLaren 720S coupe debuts the 2nd-gen Super Series cars and will be followed by a Spider and an even faster LT version.
