Belgian race driver Laurens Vanthoor is just 25 years old but he’s had the pretty good racing career so far. At the moment he drives for the WRT team and campaigns the Audi R8 LMS.
He’s had 18 starts, one pole position and 3 wins. You can make that four now. As they say, a win is the win, but none have been more spectacular than his latest checkered flag.
Sure he was up front for the bit, but there are those who reckon that he shouldn’t have been awarded the win. Sadly for the naysayers, rules is rules. And when we first heard about the crash, the description made it sound like he slid over a line to still take the win, but while the win was his, that’s not how it happened.
At a recent Macau Grand Prix, Vanthoor was up front and had just lost the lead to Earl Bamber in the Porsche when he clipped a right guard rail that sent him careening into the left rail causing him to flip.
The vehicle stayed on it’s roof and slid for a while, and the incident was seen as being bad enough to stop the race, in that situation the last full lap’s results are taken. Win.
