Back in March, Electric GT Championship was formed, hoping to be the first all-electric production-based vehicle racing series in the world. Well, it announced the ten competing teams would all be using spec-built Tesla Model S P85s, and prepped to handle the grueling environment of road course racing.
Now, it’s finally finished putting together the car, this video is here to show it off.
As you would expect, the Electric GT spec-Model S keeps its general production shape and looks from a street car, but features the host of significant upgrades to make it track-ready.
Carbon fiber body panels, the roll cage, a fire suppression system, bigger brakes, a stripped interior, and the wider track are some of the modifications made to ensure this American luxury sedan can set the decent time on the circuit.
One of the Electric GT’s co-founders, Agustin Payá, has said in the past the series would use the older, out-of-production P85 Model S opposed to any of the newer, and more powerful all-wheel-drive trims because he believes the simplicity and balance of that vehicle’s rear-wheel-drive layout is better suited for racing. The series quotes the 0-62 sprint of just 3.2 seconds, and a power output of 416 hp.
This video, full of action cuts and overlaid electric motor sound, can be seen below. The first green flag for the series should drop sometime in 2017.
