On this edition of Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay learns more about the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass off-road racer known as the Banshee.  This car has a very storied history in the world of off-road racing along with one very famous man behind the wheel.

The Banshee was piloted by James Garner, who gained notoriety as an actor in Hollywood, but was also a very successful off-road racer.  James Garner never actually owned this ’72 Cutlass, he just raced it.  The car belongs to John Swift who, along with his son, continues to race the Banshee.

This 1972 Olds Cutlass left the factory with a 455 Olds engine, but Swift replaced it with an LS3 engine for added power. This car also has a unique feature that sets it apart from other Oldsmobiles, the engine is located where the passenger’s seat should be.  This was done to help with the weight and balance of the car allowing it to achieve faster speeds.

It’s time for Jay to test drive the Banshee, which technically isn’t street legal, but does that stop him?  Hell no!  He races down the streets of L.A. until he ultimately ends up taking it off-roading where he shows off his donut-making skills, which are quite impressive.
