Doug DeMuro drove a 2015 Maserati Ghibli S Q4, which is supposed to be a “luxury” sedan worth $80,000. While it is a nice car, he claims that the price is steep when you consider the lack of perks and features found in other cars in its segment.
If you’ve driven a Dodge Dart, you’ll be familiar with the Ghibli because the two share a lot of cabin components like the window switches, mirror switches, door lock switches, starter button, turn signal stalk, and infotainment system with a mediocre backup camera resolution. The problem here is that the Ghibli is an $80,000 luxury car which shares much of its interior with a $19,000 compact sedan!
Moreover, the luxury issues go beyond the cabin materials – it doesn’t have the safety equipment featured prominently in its competitors like the 2015 BMW 550i. It has no lane keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic forward collision braking, forward collision warning, blind spot monitor, night vision and a 360-degree camera system. The 550i has all of them and it is cheaper by $10,000! It is also faster, more powerful and more technologically advanced.
The bottom line is that the 2015 Maserati Ghibli offered terrible value for the money – with poor build quality, a pseudo-luxury interior, average engine power and acceleration, and an evident lack of technology features. The 2016 model was updated and solved some of the issues, but it still pales in comparison to its BMW and Mercedes rivals in terms of build quality, power and performance.
To some folks, having a Maserati alone is worth $80,000. Each to his own, but Doug DeMuro argues that he’d rather save ten grand and go for a better ride. Click play and watch his full in-depth review.
