The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has teamed up with Adam Savage to provide a demonstration of a new vehicle safety technology: Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking (PAEB).
Also known as frontal pedestrian impact mitigation braking, a pedestrian automatic emergency braking system is a new emerging safety technology that offers automatic braking for automobiles when pedestrians are in forward path and the driver has taken inadequate action to avoid an impending crash.
A PAEB system, just like a crash imminent braking system, uses inputs from cameras in conjunction with radar to automatically apply or augment the brakes in certain driving scenarios wherein the system determines that a pedestrian is in danger of being struck by the vehicle.
In the video, Adam tests the system by driving towards a foam model of himself. Presumably the car should stop before Adam hits the dummy with his terrified face duct taped on it. Watch the video and see how things played out!
