Left-foot braking is the dark art in the automotive world. You have probably heard people talk about the technique before, and you might not know what makes it useful.
In rally racing especially, it is all about weight transfer, as Wyatt Knox of the Team O’Neil Rally School will now explain.
Knox uses left-foot braking to slow down in some instances, and mainly, he uses it to keep weight on the front end of the vehicle, helping it find more grip on this icy surface.
That is why you see him often applying throttle and brake at the same time. All in all, left-foot braking helps him run this rally stage the full second quicker than if he doesn’t use the technique.
Non-rally drivers use left-foot braking too, and for different reasons. Sports car and the open-wheel racers use left-foot braking to eliminate the tiny amount of time it takes to pivot your right foot from a throttle to the brake pedal.
But normally, you won’t see road racers hitting the accelerator and brake at the same time the way rally drivers do. Like any good driving technique, mastering left-foot braking is the lot easier said than done.
If you have never tried it before, you will probably end up inadvertently mashing the clutch pedal the first few times. Stick with it, though, and it will help you become a much faster driver on those rally stages you frequent.
