After a 19-year hiatus, the BMW 8 Series will again roll off production lines. The car will be officially unveiled this weekend as the BMW Concept 8 Series at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como.
Just like the 6 series that it will replace, the 8-series is slated to feature three variants: a cabriolet, a 2-door coupe, and a 4-door Gran Coupe, all of which are scheduled to arrive next year. Although the car is officially a concept, the German automaker has assured that the design of the production version will be close to what you’ll see in the video, with minor front-end modifications to comply with pedestrian-impact regulations.
Based on word from Europe, Bimmer’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six will be the entry-level engine. We can also expect the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 which will likely be in a 445-hp state of tune. A hybrid may also be released and at least one diesel variant will be offered in Europe, likely a twin-turbo 3.0-liter. The engines will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, with BMW’s xDrive AWD system being an option.
