You’ve probably heard about the BMW i8. It has been doing the rounds for a while. It’s a plug-in hybrid sports car that was first introduced as the BMW Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics. The i8’s main features include lots of aluminum and carbon fiber, three pistons combusting internally, and a dash of electrons.
Its 357-hp hybrid powertrain drives all four wheels, while the 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack delivers an all-electric range of 23 miles. The i8 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. The poised chassis and sharp steering provide good fun, but the regenerative braking and eco-friendly tires tend to hinder performance.
Having said that, the BMW i8 is fast and delivers instant throttle response, thanks to all the hybrid tech. The cabin is not as exciting as it could be. It has that classic, clean BMW look. But when you shell out $150,000 on a sports car that’s what you actually want…it’s clean, easy and familiar.
In a nutshell, the i8 is a brilliant piece of engineering…it’s fast, it’s good looking and it can certainly keep up with the boys from Stuttgart and Ingolstadt. It’s Bimmer’s first take on the eco sports car and hopefully the company keeps making rides like it.
