In the naturally aspirated engine, as air comes in through the intake and passes through the throttle body, you have traditionally had two setups for what happens next. Well, using longer, narrower intake runners results in the engine making more low-end power. If you use shorter, wider intake runners, an engine ends up with more high-end power. Sounds simple enough. But if you can use the intake manifold that can be both, then you don’t have to choose. And that’s where variable intake manifolds come in. It’s a sort of compromise that isn’t actually compromised. So, Engineering Explained walks through exactly why and how this works in the video below.
