The 2017 World Rally Championship season kicked off this weekend with a historic Rallye Monte Carlo. It’s the oldest event on the calendar, features plenty of night stages and ice covered pavement.
The conditions are usually abysmal, and that doesn’t mean the cars are slow. Not at all. For the 2017 WRC season, manufacturers like Toyota, Ford, and Citroën have built brand new cars for this year, each with advanced all-wheel-drive systems, high-strung turbocharged engines, and the extremely aggressive aero.
Additionally, for the Monte Carlo Rally, vehicles are allowed to run studded winter tires, meaning they will have even more grip as they hit the tight, tree-lined stages.
Youtuber 19Bozzy92 got to catch some of the vehicles in action as they flew through the stages on Friday. In addition to the top spec hatches, the lower-class cars like the Porsche GT3 make an appearance as well.
Despite the broken pavement, low temperatures, nearly zero runoff, the vehicles are moving exceedingly fast.
Watch for yourself as they zoom by, kick up some dust. They are fast. Really, astonishingly fast. Toyota’s sound is AWESOME!
